Compatible High-Tech Adhesive Films Loom Large in Future of Space and Aircraft
YLA¹s industry-leading adhesive film product line delivers unsurpassed performance, compatibility and reliability
Benicia, California - June 14, 2006 – As demands on terrestrial, aerospace, and space flight applications become increasingly severe, engineers are turning more frequently to composite materials to meet the extraordinary demands of their designs. Industry leader YLA, Inc. develops and manufactures high performance composite materials for extreme temperature and environmental exposure, and is introducing the industry’s most well-matched, high-performance selection of film adhesives tailored for use with YLA’s highly regarded unidirectional tape and woven prepregs.
Brad Pletcher, YLA President, said, "Our precision film casting technology has helped us create adhesives that range from two thousandths of an inch thick and only 75 grams per square meter to more than a hundredth of an inch thick and 375 grams per square meter. We offer our adhesive films unsupported or with a variety of supports ranging from traditional polyester mats to low dielectric, high temperature quartz fabrics."
A testimonial to YLA’s dedication to their customers is the recent award by Northrop Grumman to YLA of an unprecedented third "Gold Supplier" award – making YLA the only advanced composites manufacturer to be so recognized. The Northrop Grumman Space Technology rigorous Supplier Rating Program evaluates suppliers and subcontractors in a continuous and ongoing performance assessment.
YLA film adhesives are qualified for applications that operate from cryogenic to over 600°F. Several resin bases are available ranging from low temperature cure epoxy and cyanate esters to 350° F curing cyanate esters, and high temperature cyanate ester, bismaleimide, and polyimide systems. A unique feature of YLA cyanate ester film adhesives is their very high degree of compatibility with cyanate ester prepreg matrix resins. Markets served include satellite, aerospace and defense, commercial aircraft, industrial, consumer, and sporting applications.
RS-4A: 350º F Service, Polycyanate Film Adhesive
RS-4A is a polycyanate film adhesive developed to provide maximum bonding compatibility and adhesive performance for core/face skin structures, employing either co-curing and secondary bonding processes. RS-4A has been evaluated and qualified for application in satellite, airframe/missile and dielectric structures. RS-4A is also available in a lower temperature curing, 275º F formulation designated RS-4LT.
RS-15H: 200º F Cure, Epoxy Film Adhesive
RS-15H is an epoxy film adhesive developed to provide maximum compatibility and adhesive performance for core/face skin structures, employing either co-curing or secondary bonding processes. RS-15H is highly flexible in processing and is compatible with all types of reinforcements and cores. RS-15H has been evaluated and qualified in areas ranging from marine to aerospace and dielectric structures. RS-15H may be cured at temperatures as low as 176º F (please contact YLA for technical assistance with processing).
RS-41: 450º F Service, Cyanate Ester Film Adhesive
RS-41 was developed to replace BMI based adhesives where the problem of galvanic corrosion exists. RS-41 has good laminate/laminate and core/face skin bonding performance.
